Free OCR with automatic language detection

A scanned PDF is just a picture of a page: you cannot select, search or edit its text. Optical character recognition (OCR) reads that picture and turns it back into real text. Our OCR engine is based on Tesseract, one of the most accurate open-source OCR systems, and supports more than 100 languages.

You do not need to choose the language: the converter looks at the first pages, detects the writing system and the language, and uses the right recognition model. Pages that were scanned sideways are rotated automatically. For the best results, use scans of at least 200 DPI with good contrast.

Frequently asked questions

Which languages does the OCR support?

Latin-alphabet languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish, Polish…), Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Russian and other Cyrillic languages, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi and many more, detected automatically.

How accurate is the OCR?

On clean, printed documents accuracy is usually above 98%. Handwriting, very small text, low-resolution photos or heavily stained pages give lower accuracy.

My PDF has text, but it comes out as gibberish. What can I do?

Some PDFs contain a broken text layer. Tick “Scanned document (OCR)” to ignore it and read the page images instead.

Can it read handwriting?

OCR is designed for printed text. Neat block capitals may work, but cursive handwriting is generally not recognized reliably.

Is this converter really free?

Yes. Every converter on ConvertPDFtoWord.net is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files you convert in a day (within fair use).

Are my files safe?

Your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection, converted on our own server and permanently deleted one hour later — or immediately if you click “Delete now”. Files are never shared with anyone, never used for training and never looked at.

What is the maximum file size?

PDF files can be up to 50 MB and 300 pages. Word, ODT and RTF documents can be up to 30 MB.
