DOC or DOCX: which one do you need?
DOCX is the modern Word format, introduced with Word 2007. It is smaller, more reliable and the best choice for almost everyone. DOC is the older binary format used by Word 97 to 2003. Choose it if you work with an old computer, legacy business software, or a system that only accepts .doc files.
Both formats are produced from the same high-quality conversion, so text, tables and images are identical. You can switch between them with the format selector at any time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between DOC and DOCX?
DOC is the binary format of Word 97-2003; DOCX is the XML-based format used since Word 2007. DOCX files are smaller and handle complex layouts better, while DOC offers maximum compatibility with old software.
Can newer versions of Word open DOC files?
Yes. All versions of Microsoft Word, as well as LibreOffice, Google Docs and WPS Office, can open and edit .doc files.
Why does my company require DOC files?
Some document management systems, government portals and older templates only accept the legacy format. This converter lets you produce it directly from a PDF.
Is this converter really free?
Yes. Every converter on ConvertPDFtoWord.net is free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files you convert in a day (within fair use).
Are my files safe?
Your file is sent over an encrypted HTTPS connection, converted on our own server and permanently deleted one hour later — or immediately if you click “Delete now”. Files are never shared with anyone, never used for training and never looked at.
What is the maximum file size?
PDF files can be up to 50 MB and 300 pages. Word, ODT and RTF documents can be up to 30 MB.
